How to Avoid Prostate Cancer Through Your Diet

Here are some guidelines to consider according to the Mayo Clinic:

• Keep it low in fat. Fat-containing foods include meat, nuts, oils, and dairy such as milk and cheese. Studies show that men who ate the highest fat amount each day had a higher prostate cancer risk. This is only an association, but there are other benefits to a low-fat diet, including weight management and better heart health. Reduce your fat intake each day by limiting fatty foods or choosing low-fat versions of products.
• Get more fat from plants than from animals. Fats from animals have been shown in research to be linked to an increased prostate cancer risk. Animal-based sources include meat, butter, and lard, while plant-based ones include olive oil, nuts, and seeds.
• Increase your vegetable and fruit intake. These nature foods are full of vitamins and minerals that have been considered helpful in fighting cancer. Have them not just for your main meals, but also for your snacks. Beware of too much fruit intake, though, as it still contains sugar.
• Consume fish. Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been associated with a reduced prostate cancer risk. Try adding more fish to your diet.
• Drink green tea. Drinking green tea or taking green tea extracts have been shown to benefit men’s prostate health. The Camellia sinensis plant can be found in leaf form for steeping, and also in powder, tablet, or supplement form.
• Try adding soy to your diet. A diet of tofu, which is made from soybeans, has been linked to a reduced prostate cancer risk. The benefits are thought to come from isoflavones, a specific nutrient in soy, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peanuts.
• Drink alcohol moderately, or avoid it altogether. Limit yourself to mere social drinking, as men who drank several drinks each day were found to have an elevated risk. This will be good for your overall health as well!

Your reproductive health doesn’t end in finding the cure to erectile dysfunction – you should also pay attention to the health of your prostate. Take a simple physical examination regularly, too, to see any inflammation or abnormality in your prostate.
